The Ethereum Foundation will build a team dedicated to the security of Ethereum 2.0 to study any possible cybersecurity and cryptoeconomics issues in the next generation of the Ethereum network.
Justin Drake, an ETH 2.0 researcher at the foundation, announced the start of the recruitment process on his Twitter feed.

The foundation is looking to hire a variety of security and audit professionals, both for the software and for the overall model of the upcoming upgrade.
Among the tasks of the potential team will be the “fuzzing, bounty hunting, paging service”, which are directly related to the management of software security.
Developers of Ethereum clients have already dedicated themselves to fuzzing for the next Eth 2.0 clients. The efforts were spearheaded by Sigma Prime, the developers of the Rust based Lighthouse client.

Fuzzing is a technique for finding errors that involves feeding junk data into the software to trigger a non-standard response. Many of the errors found on the web today are due to improperly sanitized inputs, where special types of inputs can be interpreted as machine code or simply produce unwanted behavior. This helps to find these critical points and update the code to avoid potentially catastrophic errors.
The security team will also do more theoretical work on the formal verification of cryptographic algorithms. This process will seek to demonstrate mathematically that a certain algorithm is safe. The foundation is also looking for experts in economic models.
Strengthening security
With the final stages of preparation for Ethereum 2.0, Phase 0 underway, great emphasis is now being placed on network security.
Recently, the foundation launched specialized “attack networks” for bounty hunters to attempt to breach. By finding problems before the main The News Spy network launch, the developers aim to ensure a smooth transition.

This approach has proven to be very successful, with several confirmed exploits being patched. A multi-client attack network was launched today following the success of the program.
The Ethereum test network, Medal, was the first to be fully maintained by the community, and will be launched on Tuesday after securing the required number of validators before the deadline.
The main network launch will follow on an unspecified date when the developers are confident of the network’s stability.

Drake, previously anticipated that this could only happen in 2021, although some, such as Ethereum co-founder Vitalik Buterin, are more optimistic about a launch later this year.
